This is a work in progress.

In the html below the Jupyter notebook export containing the simulation code and the its outcomes so far.

The goal is to accurately measure the F-number of an optical system.

In order to do this, we first found a threshold to determine what should be considered the beam boundary

at a generic distance from the focal plane, then we used such threshould to fit a disc to the measured data

and finally we fit a linear function on the plane: [distance(from focal plane), diameter(of the disc estimating the beam)].

The slope of such linear function is out F-number.

More complex variats of the simple lensed aperture are in the works: occluded pupil, apodized pupil. -- FabioRossi - 15 Feb 2019
